Nostalgic memories on the Jersey shores
Ocean City, NJ has always held a special place in my heart. I grew up going to it’s beautiful beaches every year for our family vacations and all the time for day trips. My parents wanted a family friendly place where we could enjoy the beach but have access to activities at the same time. Some of my greatest memories are on the Jersey shores.
I remember going there with my family and spending hours on the beach and then going to the boardwalk at night to ride the amusement rides and go into the shops. My dad would give us what he called “boardwalk bucks” that my siblings and I could not wait to spend! We looked forward to every part of our trip whether it was being on the shore or on the boardwalk.
When my husband and I were dating and we would take trips to Ocean City. He would laugh at me when I would roll the window down while going over the bridge and take a deep breath of the amazing ocean air. You can literally smell the beach as you drive into town. I still do that every time I go over the bridge. In fact, I did it this past weekend by myself in the car! What can I say, I am a creature of habit.
Girls Only Weekend on the Shores
Now that I am older, Ocean City is still my favorite beach to visit. It’s reasonable driving distance from me (about an hour and a half), and there is still just as much to do and enjoy. Every year my mom and my sisters make it a tradition to go to Ocean City for a girls only weekend in October! No children, no husbands, just us girls. It is something I look forward to every year. And even though Ocean City is a dry town (no alcohol sold on the Island), you can pick up your beverage of choice before crossing the bridge, which is of course the first stop I make!
This past weekend was the Indian Summer Festival in Ocean City. We purposely make sure our girls trip falls on this weekend. During the weekend, they have all sorts of vendors lining Asbury street. They have live music and tons of shopping. To say we had a blast is an understatement! We shopped all day Saturday. We found tons of unique gifts like wood trucks, fall decor, antique furniture, clothes, and incredible food! There was even a live band called the Big Daddy Duo. I danced my heart out in the street with complete strangers to their cover music and it was so much fun!
Not only is Ocean City an amazing family spot, it is also close to Cape May, NJ. So if you are not a fan of a dry town, don’t worry! You can take a quick 25 minute drive to Cape May and have all the drinks you want! We usually like to go to the Mad Batter Restaurant for delicious food, drinks, and live music.
Good food and even better people
There is also something to be said for the kind of people that visit both Ocean City and Cape May, NJ. They seriously are so friendly! When we were trying to get into a parking spot in Cape May we were literally stuck! Somehow we managed to get our car completely stuck and not even remotely close to being in the parking spot. A random stranger stopped and spent about ten minutes helping us get our car out of the mess we somehow got it in!
On the last day of our trip we usually have breakfast at Uncle Bills pancake house. I live for their stuffed french toast! It is my favorite thing that they offer on their menu! After breakfast, we go onto the beach for a nice long walk. Nothing could be more relaxing. If you are looking for a family friendly place, tons of activities for all ages, friendly people, amazing restaurants, and beautiful clean beaches, you will want to visit Ocean City, NJ. Who knows, you might even make your own girls weekend tradition on the Jersey shores!
